Nice Day For a June Wedding?
Yes, we know it’s November, and our Special Moments Event Planning team is in the middle of one of our busiest seasons.
Our last blog post talked about wedding traditions. This week, we wanted to go one step further and discuss the history of June weddings.
The tradition of June weddings dates back thousands of years to early Rome. Times have changed, and we want to offer practical advice about the best months for a Florida wedding.
Early Roman Weddings
The tradition dates back to Roman times when they celebrated the festival of the deity Juno and his wife Jupiter, the goddess of marriage and fertility.
It was thought to bring blessings of long life, happiness, and fertility to the new couple who honored the goddess.
Weddings in Victorian Europe
The tradition is thought to have continued in Victorian times because flowers and fresh herbs were available for wedding décor, and the scent of the flowers masked body odor.
The warmer weather of June was a time for people to escape the winter season and go outdoors. In addition, they would bathe communally, thus being freshly clean in time for a wedding.
Additionally, the weather in June tends to be warmer, making traveling to the wedding by horse and carriage much easier.
A bride was expected to become pregnant almost immediately. Marrying in June meant she could still help with manual labor. After giving birth in the Spring, she could help again in the summer and with the harvest.
Thankfully, times have changed!
In modern times, the biggest reason for a June wedding is typically warmer weather.
Additionally, many businesses slow down for the summer, and with schools closing, it was easier for teachers to marry and for families to travel to a wedding.
But we still find the press, even wedding publications, writing about June brides and touting June weddings.
What About Florida?
June can be one of the hottest and most humid months of the year in Florida, and it often brings rain from pop-up thunderstorms.
Planning a beach or outdoor wedding means having a great Plan B.
For beach towns, it can also be one of the busiest times of the year, with people enjoying beaches, boating, fishing, and outdoor activities. Which means hotel rooms might be at a premium price.
So, When IS A Good Time?
The good news is that there’s beautiful weather most of the year across the Tampa Bay Area.
The spring months of March and April and the fall months of October and November have cooler temperatures and can offer beautiful weather. December, January, and February follow close behind.
Whether you are looking for beachy, rustic, or something with a modern city vibe, the Tampa Bay Area has something to offer most of the year.
At the end of the day, it’s not all about June weddings anymore!
