Happy Valentine’s Day!

We love romance and all things related to love. Since today is Valentine’s Day, we’ll have a little fun with the history and fun facts surrounding it!

A Little Odd History

What began as a Pagan feast day celebrating fertility became a day to honor St. Valentine, a Christian martyr, sometime during the 14th century.

Chaucer’s poem Parliament of Fowles (c. 1382) connected St. Valentine’s Day to romantic love. In the poem, Chaucer envisions birds gathering on Valentine’s Day to choose their mates.

A Little Known Fact: The poem is nearly 700 lines long, none of the birds get their true love, and ends as a celebration of Spring.

The tradition of courtly love on Valentine’s Day spread throughout Europe, where Lovers and friends began exchanging cards in the Middle Ages.

In 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Mo., started mass-producing valentines.

Because so many restaurants, spas, resorts, and other romantic spots offer ready-made Valentine’s Day packages, it is easy to add extra romance to your special moment.

With hearts, roses, chocolates, and diamonds being the traditional symbols of Valentine’s Day, it’s no wonder this day is ideal for marriage proposals.

Most Popular Gifts

44% of shoppers say they will purchase candy or sweets (conversation hearts, Hershey’s kisses, and boxes of chocolates lead the list).

33% chose greeting cards, 32% chose flowers, 29% chose a romantic dinner, and 14% selected wine.

Some may call it a cliché, but that heart-shaped box of chocolates never goes out of style. Year after year, it remains one of the most beloved Valentine’s gifts—no wonder why. Nearly half of consumers still choose this sweet classic to express affection, demonstrating its lasting appeal.
