Our Special Moments Event Planning team was completely blown away watching the events leading up to the recent New York Bridal fashion week.

As wedding planners working with Tampa Bay brides for over fifteen years, it is often hard to watch the struggle some brides-to-be go through finding their dream wedding gown.

For years, everything the fashion industry showed on the runway was worn by tall statuesque models, and the wedding industry was no different.

Tearful, curvy, plus-sized brides shop for wedding gowns and do not see anyone who looked like them in ads. Sample gowns in bridal salons were a shocking size 8, well below the average size of 14.

This year’s wedding industry icons, The Knot, and bridal retailer Kleinfeld, of “Say Yes To The Dress,” took on this issue head-on.

Earlier this year in conjunction with New York Fashion Week, these two leaders hosted “theCURVYcon,” an open, honest conversation around the issue of body positivity and their commitment to making fantastic wedding gowns a reality for ALL women.

 

As if that was not amazing enough, at New York Bridal Fashion Week, design house THEIA whose couture creations are inspired by the Greek Goddess of light opened many eyes and hopefully started another wave of change.

The couture designer featured model Bri Scalesse, a model who uses a wheelchair.  She wore a stunning gown hand-embroidered with microbeads, polychrome sequins, and pearls. The event designers accessorized her wheelchair with fresh flowers to complement the look.

 

The wedding industry is changing!

In the Tampa Bay area, we are fortunate to work with incredible salons who are already ahead of the curve. Some carrying plus sized wedding gowns available right in their salons, one in particular up to size 32 by a few designers.
